Don’t confuse a Tuscan villa with a Tuscan farmhouse, or casa colonica, an Italian residence that began life as a dwelling for peasants, no matter how gentrified it may have become.
Casas colonicas usually started out as small square structures, but over the centuries, the farmer owners added rooms and stories to make space for extended family members.
Because of their haphazard nature, casas colonicas may be more picturesque than Tuscan villas, but their rooms are smaller and ceilings lower. They don’t necessarily have gardens or views.
